Staying Safe Online

Parents and carers are often concerned about their children's online safety. This page contains links to a range of useful resources, aimed at both parents and children.

A wealth of information is available online to help children and young people to stay safe on the internet. The below sites have been recommended by the e-Safety team at Sheffield City Council.

The Think U Know website has targeted information for children aged 5-7, 8-10 and 11-16, as well as parents, carers, teachers and trainers. Resources and advice cover aspects of online safety including social networking sites, online gaming, chat, cyberbulling and grooming. The information is provided by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP).

Childnet International have a range of projects promoting safety online, with case studies to raise awareness of specific scenarios. They also have a particularly useful guide to social networking sites, aimed at parents, carers and teachers.

Ask About Games focuses on staying safe when playing online games. These often include chat features, and strong relationships can be formed among people who play regularly together. There is a guide to setting up parental controls for a variety of gaming consoles or PC set-ups.

Get Netwise offers a wide range of video tutorials relating to online safety issues. These include setting filters on search engines (e.g. Google), privacy settings on social networking sites (e.g. Myspace) and filtering and reporting spam email.
