One Children’s Workforce: a tool for those working with children and young people

In December 2008, the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) launched the 2020 Children and Young People Strategy, outlining their vision for those working with children and young people.

Each worker should be:
• Ambitious for every child and young person
• Excellent in their practice
• Committed to partnership and integrated working
• Respected and valued as professionals.
The workforce should have the skills and knowledge to do the best job they can.

As part of the work set out in Building Brighter Futures: Next Steps for the Children’s Workforce, CWDC has produced a framework for Children’s workforce reform, supported by a self-assessment tool and guidance.

This tool is not intended to be a ‘one off’ exercise, but the start of an annual process which will enable us to assess to what extent the city’s children’s workforce has progressed and identify key priorities for the coming year.

An Integrated Workforce

Integrated working focuses on enabling and encouraging professionals to work together effectively to deliver frontline services. The Every Child Matters: Change for Children programme sets out how services for children and young people need to be coordinated and built around their needs.

The Children's Plan: Building Brighter Futures (December 2007) describes how, by putting the needs of children and families first, we will provide a service that makes more sense to the parents, children and young people using them, for whom professional boundaries can appear arbitrary and frustrating. By investing in all of those who work with children, and by building capacity to work across professional boundaries, we can ensure that joining up services is not just about providing a safety net for the vulnerable it is about unlocking the potential of every child.
