Cabinet Minister promises to spread the word about ask Sid

Councillor Andrew Sangar, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services & Lifelong Learning at Sheffield City Council, responded to a call for help from a young Sheffield mum by promising to pass on information about the ask Sid service to every member of the Cabinet and Councillor on the City Council.

L-R Sharron Baroudi CEO of SIL, Cllr Andrew Sangar, Callum McGuren, Paris Duroe and Shia Duroe present Cllr Sangar with the brochures in Sheffield's Peace Gardens.

Councillor Sangar took receipt of 100 information brochures from Paris Duroe (20) of Gleadless Valley and her baby son Shia (22 months), both of whom are featured in the brochure. Paris first started using the service just after it launched in the spring of 2008 and is a keen advocate.

"ask Sid is a brilliant service that more people need to know about. I’ve used it to search for jobs and to see what leisure activities are on for me and my baby. I was really surprised about how much was going on. It’s difficult when you move to a new area like I did, with a new baby and no family support. ask Sid has really helped me be part of my community", said Paris Duroe.

The special commemorative brochure has been produced to mark the first full year of the ask Sid service that helps children and young people, parents, carers, teachers and professionals in family services find and distribute information about family related services.

Councillor Sangar was keen to help Paris and SIL spread the word about ask Sid and said:

"Families and young people need easy access to the vast array of help that is available to them in Sheffield. I'm happy to make sure every member of the Council knows about ask Sid so they can inform their constituents."

www.asksid.net is Sheffield's information website that is dedicated to providing comprehensive family-centred information and advice for children, parents, carers and professionals involved in providing services for families.

The ask Sid service is funded by Sheffield City Council and is managed by Sheffield Information Link (SIL). Since its launch over 13,000 unique visitors have accessed information on www.asksid.net in nearly 23,000 visits with over a 300,000 pages being viewed by visitors.

The celebration brochure contains numerous case studies about real Sheffield people who have used ask Sid to enrich their lives and find key information on family issues.
